Young and is currently at Rand Merchant Bank. He believes that an MBA in
Finance will add leadership, management, strategic thinking and decision

Aziwe Magida
MA in Organisational Development and Change, University of Manchester
A University of Cape Town graduate, Aziwe has a BA and a Diploma in
Speech and Drama. Her career path has taken her from performing arts to
public relations and marketing and she is currently an organisational and
development facilitator at Change Moves. Upon her return to South Africa,
Aziwe hopes to contribute towards a clear understanding of processes of
organisational change and development, to be able to help her clients and
their organisations to deal with the challenges related to constant change.

Caiphus Chauke
MSc in Economic Management and Policy, University of Strathclyde
Caiphus is currently the Deputy Director of the International Trade and
Economic Development at the department of Trade and Industry. He has
a BComm from Vista University a Masters in Development Studies from
the University of the Free State.
"Upon my return, I would like to use my position in government to
promote entrepreneurship in historically disadvantaged and vulnerable
communities, in order to aggressively eradicate poverty through
combating the problem of unemployment."

David Fikile Kauguwe
MSc Nanoscale Science and Technology, University of Leeds
Fikile is a University of Cape Town graduate, with a BSc Computer
Science and Physics and BSc Honours in Physics, with a thesis in
Material Science and Solid State Physics. Throughout his academic
career, he tutored both Physics and Computer Science and worked with
learners from high schools around Cape Town. Fikile is passionate about
research, development and teaching. He is currently working for
Arivia.Kom, an ITC company, as a Business Analyst. He believes his
course will focus on a new technological methodology to create new
electronic devices or even genetically modified products. This will provide
him with the skills and means to modify whatever matter, at molecular
and atomic level, to change its properties for the benefit of society.

Erasmus Sbusiso Msomi
MSc International Development, University of Manchester
Sbusiso is currently the Director of Thandanani Children's Home. Having
previously been the Director of the uMngeni AIDS Centre, and been
involved in the international AIDS Conference held in Durban in 2000,
Sbusiso is determined to play a role in tackling the issue of HIV/AIDS in
South Africa. With an MA in Social Work from the University of the
Western Cape, he believes that the course at Manchester will provide
him with the skills to formulate and implement social policies on issues
that have not yet been satisfactorily addressed.

Gail Smith
MA Global Political Economy, University of Sussex
A Social Science graduate from the University of Cape Town, Gail is
currently a consultant at Southern Hemisphere. Gail intends to use the
Sussex MA to help to analyse how changes in the world economy impacts
on the South African state and civil society.

Graunt Kruger
MSc in New Media Information and Society, London School of Economics
A Rhodes University graduate, Graunt joined the Faculty of Journalism for
six months and his passion for teaching was apparent. In 2002 he joined
the investigative documentary series, Carte Blanche, as an Interactive
Editor. Graunt believes that the MSc in New Media will give him a global
perspective and is excited at the prospect of learning in an environment
that excels in media production. "My long term ambition, when I return is to
strengthen South Africa's media sector to be internationally competitive.
As a journalist I can play a key role in many social and developmental
areas, I will be an asset in distributing accurate information to enable
citizens to make informed choices."

Gugu Ntuli
MBA Sports Management, Conventry University
Gugu believes that South Africa has great potential in the sporting
environment and therefore recognises a need to acquire the skills to drive
South African sports to it full capacity. While South Africa has good, solid
sporting foundations, she argues that a thorough understanding of media,
financial management and communication needs to be improved. "My
course will address these issues and also develop my ability to assist other
South Africans to be professional in managing all aspects of sports
operation."

Millicent Maroga
MSc Globalisation and Development, University of Manchester
Securing the scholarship at the age of 19, Millicent is our youngest scholar to
date. With three cum laude qualifications from the Rand Afrikaans University (a
BA in Humanities; BA (Honours) in Industrial Sociology and a certificate in
Marketing Management) she believes that the MSc at Manchester will equip her
with the knowledge and expertise on the issues of economic development and
globalisation, that will help her to influence policy pertaining to youth economic
development and empowerment upon her return. Her academic achievement
includes the coveted Golden Key International Society membership award and
the accolades of being selected as one of South Africa's Brightest Young Minds
for the year 2002. Millicent has recently been appointed by the premier of
Gauteng, Mr Mbhazima Shilowa to serve as a Youth commissioner for the
Gauteng commission on Youth Development for 20042006
term of office.

Mpumelelo Ncwadi
MPhil Engineering for Sustainable Development, University of Cambridge
Mpumelelo is a founding director of 3i Environmental Consulting, which
provides specialised environmental and waste management services to
the local authorities and a selected number of private sector
organisations. He has gained vast working experience for various major
corporations and consulting firms in the mining, chemical and waste
management industries, including Anglo American Corporation, Sasol
Synthetic Fuels and Enviroserv Holdings. He has a Bachelor of Science
in Civil Engineering from the University of Texas at Austin.

Mushtaq Ebrahim
LLM, University College London
Mushtaq is an associate in the Insurance Litigation department at Webber
Wentzel Bowens. He obtained a degree of Bachelor of Business Science
in 1998 and the LLB (cum laude) in 2000, both from the University of Cape
Town. He has previously worked as a procurement analyst for Shell
Trading & Shipping Company in London. His areas of expertise include
insurance law and litigation. He also has a particular interest in the law of
delict. Mushtaq believes that his experience in England will be invaluable
towards his goal of participating in law reform and development.

Currently a Deputy Director General with the Public Service Commission.
With an LLB from the University of Natal, Odette believes that the MA at
the University of Sussex will help her to play a role in tackling the economic
issues facing SA, and to make excellence within the public service a
reality.

Thomas Hlongwane
MA Management and Policy Studies, University of Bristol
Originally from the Xitlhelani village in the Limpopo Province, Thomas
started his teaching career at a time when resources and materials for
learners were not easily obtained. In 2001 Thomas successfully
completed A BEd Honours Degree at the University of Witwatersrand.
"When I complete my MA in Management and Policy Studies,
accompanied by my rural background I will bring the much needed hands
on knowledge and understanding for the upliftment of the level of literacy
in our rural communities."

Yogin Naidoo
MBA, Cass Business School, City University, London
Yogin invented the public phonecard recycling bin, which won him the
prestigious "New Venture Creation Award" from the WITS Business
School. A WITS university graduate, Yogin is currently writing a book on
Indian bands in apartheid South Africa. He is an entrepreneur and has a
tourism, investor, health, safety and communication online resource
business. He is also involved in a provincial AIDS awareness campaign,
which he hopes to roll out nationally.
